Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has shed light on why Chelsea loanee Raheem Sterling has struggled for minutes this season, attributing the situation to the club’s persistent injury issues. Despite Sterling’s eagerness to contribute, the former Manchester City winger has found himself on the fringes of the Gunners’ squad.
Sterling’s Arsenal Journey So Far
Sterling joined Arsenal on a season-long loan from Chelsea during the summer transfer window. However, his impact has been minimal, with only four starts across all competitions. Two of these appearances were in the Carabao Cup against lower-league sides Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End.
The 28-year-old’s limited involvement has raised questions, especially given his reputation as a dynamic attacking presence. Arteta, though, has attributed Sterling’s lack of game time to the team’s injury crisis, which has forced tactical adjustments.
Arteta’s Explanation
Speaking to reporters, Arteta expressed his regret over Sterling’s reduced role:
“There have been moments where it’s been tough. It’s very difficult for me to accept that I haven’t been able to give him more opportunities,” he said.
Arteta clarified that Sterling’s exclusion hasn’t been due to tactical reasons but rather out of necessity.
“When he hasn’t started games, 90 percent of my substitutions have been focused on managing minutes or dealing with injuries. It’s not because he lacks quality. I genuinely want him to play more because I believe he can bring so much to the team. He’s been fantastic in the dressing room and is absolutely desperate to play.”
Arteta also acknowledged the emotional toll on Sterling, who has faced similar challenges at Chelsea:
“It’s tough when you’ve had an important role at a club, impacting games regularly, and then find yourself in this situation. I feel for him, and I hope we can turn this around as the season goes on.”
Arsenal’s Injury Woes
Arsenal’s backline has been hit particularly hard, with key defenders like Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel, Ben White, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Riccardo Calafiori sidelined. These absences have forced Arteta to prioritize defensive stability and adapt his game plans, indirectly affecting Sterling’s chances to feature prominently.

Currently sitting third in the Premier League, six points behind league leaders Liverpool, Arsenal will face Everton at the Emirates on Saturday.
