5 Pakistan Cricketers Who Came Out of Retirement More Than Once, Including Mohammad Amir

Over the years, many cricketers have retired from international cricket only to return later, often due to personal reasons, team needs, or the pull of the game itself. While this is not uncommon globally, Pakistan has seen a significant number of high-profile players reverse their retirements and make a comeback, much to the intrigue of fans and critics alike. Whether driven by team dynamics, outside influence, or personal decisions, several Pakistani cricketers have walked this path multiple times.

Here’s a look at five notable Pakistan cricketers who made multiple comebacks after announcing their retirement.

1. Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi, one of the most iconic all-rounders in cricket history, announced his retirement from Tests in 2006, citing a desire to focus on ODIs. However, just weeks later, he reversed that decision following persuasion from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Afridi’s career, which included remarkable performances in both Tests and limited-overs cricket, saw him retire and return several times. In 2011, after Pakistan’s semi-final loss to India in the ODI World Cup, Afridi retired from international cricket once again. But, within months, he withdrew his retirement and returned to international cricket, continuing to play for Pakistan until his final retirement years later.

2. Imran Khan

Regarded as one of Pakistan’s greatest all-rounders, Imran Khan’s career spanned both Tests and ODIs, where he made an indelible mark. After leading Pakistan to the 1983 World Cup semi-finals, Khan retired in 1987 at the age of 35. However, under immense pressure from fans and the PCB, Khan was coaxed out of retirement by then-President Zia-ul-Haq. He returned in 1988 and captained Pakistan to their first-ever World Cup victory in 1992 before retiring for good. Khan later transitioned into politics and became the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

3. Mohammad Amir

Mohammad Amir’s career has been a dramatic rollercoaster. After a sensational debut in 2009, Amir’s career took a dark turn due to his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal during the 2010 tour of England. After serving a five-year ban, Amir made his comeback to international cricket in 2016, playing a crucial role in Pakistan’s victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. Amir retired from all formats in 2021 but stunned the cricketing world by announcing his availability for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Though he performed well in the tournament, with seven wickets, Pakistan did not make it past the Super 8 stage. Just a few months later, Amir announced his retirement again in December 2024.

4. Imad Wasim

Imad Wasim, known for his all-rounder capabilities, made his debut for Pakistan in 2015 and quickly became a key player in white-ball cricket. After being overlooked for the 2023 World Cup, Wasim announced his retirement from international cricket. However, after a stellar performance in the 2024 PSL, where he excelled with both bat and ball, he reconsidered his decision. He made himself available for the 2024 T20 World Cup but had a modest campaign. In December 2024, Wasim once again retired from international cricket, though he stated that he would continue to play in domestic and franchise cricket.

5. Javed Miandad

Javed Miandad is one of Pakistan’s greatest batsmen, known for his resilience and match-winning performances. He retired from international cricket after being dropped from the team in 1994 due to poor form. In a tearful announcement, Miandad declared his retirement, which led to a public outcry. Fans, along with then-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, urged him to reconsider his decision. Miandad made his return to the national squad and was part of Pakistan’s 1996 World Cup-winning team. However, after a lackluster performance in the 1996 World Cup, Miandad finally retired for good, bringing an end to his illustrious career.

These cricketers’ careers are a testament to the unpredictable nature of the sport, where retirements are often just another chapter in an ever-evolving journey. Whether due to personal reflections, team calls, or the compelling nature of cricket itself, these players showed that in Pakistan, the end of one chapter often marks the beginning of another.
